All Legs and Curiosity

My friend and I sat in our chairs doing our best to pretend we did not have tears falling down our faces as Brian Doyle read his essay about a mother sending her daughter off to college. The essay describes a conversation Mr. Doyle had with a mother in the hallways of the University of Portland as parents bid adieu to their now college-attending offspring. Every fall in the Duck Store and all over Eugene we see such parents participating in this ritual of the ultimate drop off. Of course, no one can tell it as well as Brian Doyle, which is why my friend and I were quietly sobbing in the Eugene Public Library imaging the day when we would send our own daughters off to college… no matter that they were only 4 at the time. I emailed Brian and asked where I might find that particular essay (it is entitled “All Legs and Curiosity” and can be found in his book Grace Notes, (ACTA Pub, 2011), page 51. I also asked if I might share it with you, dear Blog Readers (Yes!). If you are not already familiar with the books of Brian Doyle, I shall list some of them below because I know you will want to read all of them after this sample. I also am confident you will need Kleenex or a hanky. And so now, without further ado… “All Legs and Curiosity,” by Brian Doyle.
